First impressions are not my friend, either.

Mission: A Day In The Life...
Location: Captain's ready room

Eleanor was still mostly bewildered, by the time she arrived at the base's administration complex. She stated blankly at the door to the commander's office, before her brain reengaged and she found the mental capacity to grasp that the door didn't open because she needed to press the chime.

Shaking her head, She took a deep breath, before brushing a strand of hair out of her face, them pressing said chime, while looking around, self consciously.

Inwardly, she knew one thing for sure, as she waited to report in to the Base commander. Jane was never going to believe this.

"Come." Miranda called at the sound of the chime.

Walking in, Eleanor came to attention and saluted Miranda. "Ensign Eleanor Frost reporting for duty, ma'am." Eleanor said, in what she hoped was an appropriate manner, having already forgotten her disheveled appearance.

Miranda turned her chair back from the porthole and was shocked at the state of the young woman standing in front of her.

"Ensign Frost? Are you here to report a muggging?"

Eleanor blinked for several seconds. "Uhm. No. I don't think so, ma'am. I'm here to-" She paused, catching her reflection in the view port. "Oh. Great." She winced. "I am so sorry, ma'am."

"I understand Operations officers can be a bit "lenient" with their uniforms, but I think this is taking it to an extreme. Care to explain?"

"I would say this isn't likely to happen again, ma'am but I think this is probably a fairly good warning." Eleanor said, wincing. "I'm a bit of a klutz. I mean. Not with my job. With. You know. Everything else."

"I'll keep that in mind, but I am going to expect better from you moving forward Chief. You'll be expected to lead by example."

"About that." Eleanor shook her head. "That's not a joke, right? I was a bit... Shocked by that."

Miranda leaned forward in her chair with a very clear scowl. "Does this look like my 'I'm joking' face?" she asked with a dramatic gesture toward her dower expression with her right hand.

"I don't give two (Klingon expletive deleted) about your file, who your wife might be, or whom she may or may not have very rightly punched in the face. I need an Operations Manager, and you've got the best qualifications among the craptastic list of choices they sent me. Do you not want the job?"

"No, it's not that I don't want the job. Ma'am." Eleanor frowned. "It's... I mean. I'm me. I understand the limitations that this brings forward." Eleanor shrugged. "It was also... Implied... That I likely wouldn't be receiving such a post for at least several years."

"Yeah, well, Admiral LaSalle can kiss my perfectly pert posterior." she said, with a venom that can only come from a pissed off woman. "I run this base, and I make the staffing decisions." Miranda suddenly stopped talking and took a deep cleansing breath.

"That aside for the moment, I meant what I said. I can't have you wandering the base looking like you been in a fight with a coffee machine."

"Getting in fights with machines is kind of my thing. I usually win. I call them battle scars." Eleanor shrugged. "I'll try my best."

"That's literally all I can ask." the Captain added, slightly calmer.

"Sorry. Again. I'm kind of an environmental hazard with coffee." Eleanor chanced a slight smile. "I'll keep your base in good shape, though, ma'am." She omitted the phrase or die trying. but she was pretty sure they were both thinking it.

"Alright then. See that you do. I need a full systems status update by this time tomorrow. We've got a lot of brass inbound and the place needs to be inspection ready, Understood?"

"It'll be ready, ma'am. Promise." Eleanor nodded, while squaring her shoulders. She had a sneaking suspicion that a brass inspection this close to her taking assignment was a deliberate trap. She had no intention of falling in to it.

"If there's nothing else, you're dismissed. And for goodness sake, go get cleaned up, yeah?"

"For however long it lasts, yes ma'am." Eleanor said, with a nod.
